As relatively family-oriented, more or less safe surf site, it came as a major surprise when complaints recently flooded in about porno links on the results page of our Search Page. Since there are no porno links inside of Pacoima Ranch, our investigation centered on the two search engines we hire to maintain static indexes, the WhatUSeek.COM and FindFast.COM search sites. A dynamic Perl script also crawls our pages constantly to maintain an additional keyword index for people willing to wait a few minutes for up-to-the-moment results. Static indexes are faster, but may yield slightly stale results.
No matter how we worked it (including using "naughty words" as keywords), FastFind.COM yielded nice, kid friendly results. Our very first try with WhatUSeek.COM on a potential double-entendre word ("suck") yielded an amazingly indecent results page. At the very top, above our static results, were three porno site links (with fullon pornographic descriptions). Though clearly marked as paid links, it was unsettling to see the porno links on a page decorated with Pacoima Ranch logos, colors and search results. An immediate tech aid E.Mail was sent and the Search Page was altered to remove WhatUSeek.COM while we wait to hear from WhatUSeek.COM's tech people on how to resolve this problem.
In the interim, a total ban on WhatUSeek.COM is in force throughout all Pacoima Ranch sites. We strongly encourage any of our readers who use WhatUSeek as their site's static index search engine to doublecheck their results page (use "suck", it yields incredible results) for acceptable links. While we're not prudes in the slightest, porno links on ones results page is most likely not a good thing.
