Update (July 6, 2001):
Due to a nonrecoverable database loss, two nominees have had their applications lost. One of these was a website for a series of self-help and help books. This application was not eligible for the Vision Award. The second nomination had a title similar to Club Art and this nominee was going to be awarded. If you are either of these, or have information about how the awards committee can contact them, let us know. Because multiple copies of the awarded sites are kept on multiple servers, the URL's of awarded sites are intact, though the courtesy copies of the nominations were lost. If you are an awarded site or its adminstrator, feel free to drop us a line so that your E.Mail address can be placed back into the database.
Update (June 1, 2001):
The newly remodeled Forum and newly constructed Chat Room for the Vision Awards are now open for all. The purpose of having this Forum and Chat Room is for successful awardees and budding applicants to understand and share tips amongst themselves about how the award is based on content and concept. In addition, it is anticipated that these will be the more intellectual of the many Forums and Chat Rooms. As with any Forum or Chat Room, the exact personality of them will be revealed over time.
Original story (May 12, 2001):
With over seventy awards having been issued in its two-year history, the Vision Award has rapidly become one of the more prestigious awards being offered to recognize online excellence in concept. As a rule, only about 20% of sites submitted are awarded. There is no minimum nor maximum number of awards in any quarter--each nomination stands on its own merits and is usually reviewed in less than a week. The award is fully registered with both North American and European award societies.
The purpose of the Vision Award is to recognize "breathtaking concepts that make you want to return" and to avoid the frequently technically excellent, yet unfilfilling sites littering the 'Net. These perfect yet unsatisfying sites may have excellent code, beautiful graphics, and the easiest navigation you ever surfed, yet have virtually no content nor purpose to them. In essense they are beautiful mannequins--when what is needed is a friend who knows stuff. The Vision Award attempts to return to the way the 'Net was in the mid 90's and to recognize sites with superior concept and content. Essentially we expect each site to teach us, tell us the best joke ever, show us the largest collection of your favorite subject and force us to bookmark you so we can return from time to time and see how a cybermaestro lays out excellent content with concept.
Vision Award recipients enjoy many privileges: increased hits to their site (including the important "external link" count); higher status as a recipient of a recognized and registered award; their own Forum (under construction, should be finished by May 25, 2001); and their own Chat Room (under construction, should be finished by May 25, 2001).
Winners have full rights with The News Letter and are strongly encouraged to submit Guest Columnist articles about 'Net topics of general interest. They may also opt to shamelessly plug their site by submitting a My Site article. Articles should be submitted as plain text (.txt) to the Community Webmaster. Graphics and photos are not solicited and should not be submitted. For full details and an easy online submission, click on the appropriate links above.
