A Fanciful History - The Founders Of The Portal

Many causes and reasons went into the demise of the formerly grand cybercity that formed the core of The Portal. Even stranger was the demise of The Portal itself. The most likely cause was that when the palace coup of 1998 yanked all authority from London that New York totally lacked the ability to understand how to keep the community online, and may have even been frightened by the community. Many mundane (and really bad) everyday decisions snowballed into the toxic environment now "enjoyed" by the few active Citizens who still maintain sites there. The smart ones bailed, and the really smart ones formed their own communities. The Portal met its end when Verio decided to "play hostage" with the files over a disagreement about the exchange rate for USD (United States Dollars) and RSR (Russian Standard Rubles). This explanation is dry and boring, and lacks the drama that really was a part of those events (as anyone who lived through them would know). It also makes New York look almost innocent, which they weren't - they purposefully and with malice lied to the community, then disbanded it. Verio was little better, they made then broke several agreements. We've reset much of what happened in this "fanciful history" to reflect these truths, then obscurred the actual identites of those involved to avoid lawsuits. An actual movie of the disaster that allowed Rhonda, Brittany and Sean to escape the clutches of New York. This is a large file (about 380K). The source of this movie is unknown, it merely appeared as a signal in cyberspace, much the same way that low level background radiation in the physical Universe is the echo of the Big Bang.
