Color Words - No Hex

These are the original way to add color to tags. Notice that most of these colors are not part of the browser-safe palettes, yet they are cross-browser compatible. For best compliance (HTML 4.x+, X-HTML 1.x+ and XML 1.x+) use them in the lowercase form.

Each cell below uses the actual colorname as the bgColor, no graphics are used to produce the effect. There are 140 colornames in the recognized colorname palette. Be sure to test a colorname as some of them may be slightly misleading. Notice how chartreuse and lawngreen look similar to lime, how limegreen looks like a true medium green. Many of the ultrapale greys and blues will wash out to bright white on most monitors. Also notice that fuschia and magenta are exactly the same color, as are aqua and cyan.

Hex triplet codes are shown below the colorname to aid in colormatching in graphic software. We discovered our favorite bgColor (#ffffef - a rich pale ivory that is the bgColor of this page) by trying to match the colorname ivory (#fffff0) in the colorpicker of the original beta for Paint Shop Pro (1996). It didn't pick the color perfectly, but since we were consistent about using #ffffef (255, 255, 239) in all our work since then, our .jpg's invisibly blend into the bgColor of the page. Similar precision in any color match will produce this result, even though .jpg's are not transparent.

When using colornames in tags, do not use the crosshatch (#) to start the color. Simply place the colorword in the tag in place of the hex triplet. We learned about colorwords when using WebTV and in trying to figure out how to make Opera see bgColor the same as Netscape and Internet Explorer. For certain colors (browns, reds, ivories and pinks in particular), the colorname palette is superior to the 216 palette.
